Spring Training is officially underway as the Mets have made their way to Port St. Lucie to get ready for the 2013 season. The Mets have been working hard down in Florida and there has been no shortage of news for this week’s edition of Mets 101 News and Notes.
Frank Francisco Could Start Throwing on Monday
It appears as Frank Francisco’s elbow has improved. Francisco had surgery in December to remove bone chips from his elbow. The Mets closer had been shut down early in camp with elbow inflammation. The inflammation has gone down and Francisco is set to throw for the first time (on flat ground) on Monday.
Jenrry Mejia had been prevented from entering the United States because of visa issues. The Dominican Republic needed to confirm the top prospect’s age and identity. Everything checked out—Mejia is Mejia and he is, in fact, 23 years old. The Mets portrayed the check as random and routine and said that Mejia had been working out at the team’s Dominican facility. Manager Terry Collins said that he intends to use Mejia as a starting pitcher this year and in the future.
Murphy Receives Cortisone Shot
Daniel Murphy returned to Florida on Wednesday after a doctor’s appointment in New York. Murphy received cortisone injection in his right hip at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Since returning to camp, Murphy has been riding the stationary bike and icing his right side. General Manager Sandy Alderson expects Murphy to be back to full speed within a week.
Nieuwenhuis Will Get First Crack at Top Spot in Lineup
Terry Collins announced that Kirk Nieuwenhuis will get the first shot at being the Mets’ leadoff hitter on Saturday when the Mets open Grapefruit League play on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. Nieuwenhuis started 29 games from the leadoff spot last season and hit .264 with a .303 on-base percentage in that role.
