Just in time for the New Year, Mets 101's Seven in Seven series returns as our gift to you. Each week, the Mets 101 staff will begin a countdown of topics related to the New York Mets (i.e. best third baseman, worst defeat, etc.). We will begin our countdowns with number seven and work all the way to number one. This week's Seven in Seven list counts down the seven biggest Met killers to plague our beloved franchise. Today we look at number one on our list: Chipper Jones.
Stat line against the New York Mets: 245 games, .309 average, .406 on base percentage, 265 hits, 168 runs, 49 homers, 159 RBI.
Chipper Jones is not only the number one Met killer, he might be the most hated Met opponent in franchise history. Jones’s dominance against the Mets symbolizes those unbeatable Atlanta Braves teams that won 11 straight NL East titles.
Jones’ numbers against the Mets speak for themselves. His 49 homers put him in a tie for second all-time for Mets opponents. (The other guy is former Philadelphia Phillies' star third baseman of Mike Schmidt). Jones earned his place on this list with his play at Shea Stadium. In 88 games at Shea Stadium, a little more than half a season, he hit .313 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs. The confines of Shea Stadium were so friendly to Jones that he named his son Shea after the park.
Chipper Jones nearly single handedly ended the Mets season in 1999. The Mets and Braves were battling for the NL East title and played each other six times in the final ten days of the season. The Braves won five of those six games behind four home runs from Jones. The Mets won the NL Wild Card that year and faced the Braves in the NLCS. The Braves defeated the Mets in six games and made it to the 1999 World Series.
Jones retired at the end of the 2012 season. The countdown has officially begun until he is enshrined in Cooperstown. While he may be one of the best third basemen of this generation, Chipper Jones will always be known as “Larry” to the Mets’ faithful and rightfully earned his number one spot on the top seven Met killers.
