Just in time for the New Year, Mets 101's Seven in Seven series returns as our gift to you. Each week, the Mets 101 staff will begin a countdown of topics related to the New York Mets (i.e. best third baseman, worst defeat, etc.). We will begin our countdowns with number seven and work all the way to number one. This week's Seven in Seven list counts down the seven biggest Met killers to plague our beloved franchise. Today we look at number four on our list: Pat “The Bat” Burrell.

4. Pat Burrell

Stat Line Against the New York Mets: 162 Games, .245 batting average, 42 homers, 79 runs, 106 RBI.

Pat Burrell was a respected power hitter who had a nice twelve-year big league career. While he was only a career .253 hitter, he finished with 292 homers, 976 RBI and two World Series rings.

Against the New York Mets, Pat Burrell was a world-beater.

In a full season’s worth of at bats against the Mets, Burrell jacked 42 home runs. Burrell’s second-favorite franchise to hit home runs against was the Miami Marlins against whom he hit a measly 26 homers.

Not only did Burrell hit a ton of home runs against the Mets, he always tended to hit them in clutch situations. Most notably, Burrell went deep four times in a four game sweep at the hands of the Phillies in late August 2007. The Mets went on to drop 12 of their last 17 games to piss away a seven-game division lead and miss the playoffs by one game.

Burrell ranks sixth all-time for career home runs hit against the New York Mets. His favorite Met pitcher to face during his career was Steve Trachsel.  In 52 at bats against Trachsel, Burrell hit .250 with six homers, two doubles and a triple. He had 35 total bases against the righty and slugged .673.
