New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson has hit the Winter Meetings in Nashville with a lot of work to do. The team is currently finalizing a contract extension with David Wright, so the team's focus has turned to R.A. Dickey. At least eight teams have expressed an interest in trading for the Cy Young winner, and Sandy Alderson would like to have Dickey's situation resolved by the end of the week. (Be sure to check out for full details on the Dickey story). The pitching market has really heated up at the Winter Meetings, particularly as teams look to explore alternatives in the trade market. The top pitcher on the market, Zack Greinke, could make his decision at the meetings, leaving one team very happy and the others scrambling to find alternatives. The free agent pool of difference making starters is thin to begin with, and is even thinner following Dan Haren's decision to sign a one year deal with Washington. That could make the market for some of the starters available via trade, like Dickey, very lucrative. Alderson may look to play out the Dickey situation similar to how he handled the Carlos Beltran trade, playing the market to obtain a couple of pieces that will help the Mets in the long term. The team has not ruled out signing Dickey to a contract extension, but it appears that Alderson is trying to maximize Dickey's value to the Mets either via trade or his presence on the team for the next three years. We will continue to follow the Dickey developments and all things happening at the Winter Meetings at Mets 101.
